GWUC Headlines for w/e 15 April 2017

Family Easter Event - Sunday 16 April at 3pm - A reminder about the Free Family Easter Event at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Please come with your children or grandchildren and join with the local community as we have an afternoon of fun on the lawns of the church.
Second Annual Walk-a-thon - Saturday 29 April - Join in and help raise money for School Chaplaincy at Glen Waverley Secondary College, the Glen Waverley Secondary College Breakfast Program, and Lynn Peters SRI Teaching. Full details and sign-up sheets on the noticeboard.
Appeals for Africa, Floods and Lent - There are a large number of appeals open at present. Please see the Bulletin for more details about the individual appeals and how you might support.

2017 Palm Sunday Walk for Justice – Today – Sunday 9 April at 2pm - The 2017 Palm Sunday Walk for Justice is on today, Sunday 9 April, leaving the State Library (Swanston Street, Melbourne) at 2pm. The Walk highlights concern about the harsh treatment of refugees. A flyer is available on the Stewards Table or the Outreach notice board for further details.
Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday – Friday 14 April - Following the 9.15am service on Good Friday, 14 April, Hot Cross Buns and a cuppa will be available in the hall. Please bring some Hot Cross Buns to share. Everyone welcome.
Way of the Cross – Friday 14 April at 11am - The Way of the Cross will be celebrated at Waverley Central Oval (cnr Waverley and Springvale Roads) at 11am on Good Friday. This is an ecumenical event open to all.
Family Easter Event – Easter Day Sunday 16 April – Volunteers Needed - Easter Sunday afternoon at 3pm we will be holding another Children’s Easter Event here. We are looking for volunteers to help out as children play games, look for easter eggs and make some easter crafts. The sign up sheet is on the office counter, we’d love to have your help.

Daylight Savings - Sunday 2 April at 3am - A reminder to everyone that Daylight Savings officially finishes this Sunday at 3am (ie: 3am becomes 2am). So, unless you want to be extra early to church, please turn your clocks back 1 hour before you go to bed on Saturday night.

This Sunday – Ordination of Julie Hall – 26 March at 3pm - Julie’s Ordination Service will take place at 3pm on Sunday 26 Marrch at St Michael’s (Collins Street, Melbourne). All are welcome. For more information please see the Weekly Bulletin.
This Sunday – Melbourne Singers Pleasant Sunday Afternoon – 26 March at 2.30pm - All are welcome to attend Camberwell Uniting Church (314 Camberwell Road) to hear The Melbourne Singers. Admission is $25 and includes High Tea. Funds raised will support asylum seekers.
Hot Cross Bun Morning Tea – Thusday 30 March - Join us from 10am until 12noon for hot cross buns and tea or coffee. All donations will support The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Please add your name to the list on the Office Counter if you plan to attend.

Next NewView Issue - Submissions Due 20 March - The deadline for submissions for the next edition of NewView is Monday 20 March. The theme for this issue is ‘Seasons of Life’. Of particular interest among the attached documents is GrowingYoungBookReport, a report on a book that Alanee read during her recent study leave, on how to attract young people to the church, and the things we do that drive them away. Expect to hear more.

Ash Wednesday Service - Wednesday 1 March - The Ash Wednesday Service will be held on Wednesday 1 March at 7:30pm. All are welcome.
Secondhand Book Sale - Saturday 4 March - The Secondhand Book Sale is being held on Saturday 4 March from 8:30am until 1pm. We need your support to ensure the success of this event. The church is now accepting donations of books. If you are able to help set-up (from 2pm Friday) or pack-up (from 1pm Saturday) it would be appreciated. Rosters - Please check the letter rack for rosters if you have not already done so.
Monash Council parking restrictions - Council car park in Bogong Avenue – the entire car park is closed all day of Tuesday 21 February, and sections will remain closed for painting and maintenance until 10 March. Please be mindful that this will put additional pressure on our Church car park.

Material Aid Offering – Today – Sunday 12 February - The material aid offering for Sunday 12 February will be for Brentwood Secondary College’s wellbeing department. Donations of food, stationery, and toiletries are requested. Specific items required are are listed in the monthly bulletin.
Three Blind Mice – Mousetrap Theatre – Monday 20 February - On Monday 20 February the local production of “Three Blind Mice” will be presented at Croydon UCA at 7.30pm. Proceeds from ticket sales will assist Asylum Seekers through Lentara. Details of this production are on the Outreach noticeboard.
COP Committee 2017 Membership - Outreach Committee is inviting expressions of interest for a woman who is willing to serve on the COP Committee this year. For further information and expressions of interest see Neil Peters, Chair of Outreach.

Welfare Request - Do you have a workable iPad sitting unused at home? A local child has been requested by her primary school to bring an iPad to school. The family is struggling to pay for books, uniforms etc. and making this purchase is out of the question. If you can assist, please contact Dorothy Lockhart on 0419 133 556.
Adult Group – Friday 3 March from 1.45pm - Please note the change of date for the first Adult Group event for 2017. The first get-together for Adult Group in 2017 will be an afternoon tea at Madeline’s at Jells (in Jells Park) on Friday 3 March at 1.45pm. Church Council Elections – 18 December @ All Services - A ballot for election of Church Councillors will be held today at all services. Please make sure that you vote at one service today.
Carols on Kingsway – 18 December @ 7.30pm - Come and be part of the Christmas festivities at Carols on Kingsway at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
Empty Christmas Tree – Last Day to Drop Off – 18 December - Today is the last day to bring gifts for our tree. Gifts can include food items, toys, toiletries, vouchers for all ages. Gifts (preferably unwrapped) can be left under the tree until December 18, and support people in our local community and Broadmeadows UnitingCare.
Kids Christmas Event – 22 December from 2pm to 4pm - Join us for our annual Kids Christmas event as we explore the Christmas story in an interactive way, with entertainment, craft, activities, a little snack and challenges. Advent Study – Commencing Monday 7 November for 4 weeks - Four groups will be running for this study – Monday night at 7.30pm, Tuesday at 2.30pm, as well as an email and facebook group. Please add your name to the list on the Office Counter.
More Than Godspell – Friday 11 November at 7.30pm - Please attend this concert being put on by the Diamond Valley Singers. Cost: $20. Fundraising efforts will support NCYC. It will be a great night.

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Reminder – Final Drop Off Day Thursday 27 October - All collected shoeboxes will be taken to Operation Christmas Child on Friday morning, so please make sure your filled box is delivered to the Church Office on Thursday 27 October.
Seniors Morning Tea at The Hub – Thursday 27 October at 10am - Come and enjoy morning tea at The Hub to thank our Seniors for all they do to help in our community. All ages welcome. Bring your family and friends. All donations to research into Motor Neurone Disease.
Outreach BBQ Forum – 30 October at 12noon - On 30 October we will be hearing from David Karoly, one of Australia’s leading climate and environmental scientists. Lunch will be provided. The cost is $5. Please put your name on the list in the foyer to assist with catering.
GWUC Trivia Night – Saturday 5 November at 7pm - Please put your trivia hat on and join us for the 2016 Trivia night which is a family event and a fundraiser for the church. $5 entry per person.
Advent Study – Commencing Monday 7 November for 4 weeks - Four groups will be running for this study – Monday night at 7.30pm, Tuesday at 2.30pm, as well as an email and facebook group. Please add your name to the list on the Office Counter.

Conversations on Alzheimer’s and Spirituality – Sunday 18 September at 2pm - The fifth in our series “Conversations on Alzheimer’s and Spirituality” will happen this afternoon at 2pm. Free Spirit Concert - Sunday 4 September at 2.30pm - All are invited to an afternoon of music by Free Spirit at 2.30pm on Sunday 4 September. Enjoy contemporary, sacred and secular music, jazz and comedy followed by afternoon tea. Admission is $20 Adult and $15 Concession with all proceeds supporting our Church activities. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Moon Festival Community Event - Saturday 17 September from 2pm to 4pm - As part of our vision to be amongst the Kingsway Community, and to become a more intercultural church, we are planning to hold a family fun event in the Chinese family tradition of the Moon Festival. We are inviting families to join us for crafts, games and refreshments. If you would like to help out we would love to hear from you. We are looking for people who enjoy making crafts with kids, serving tea and coffee, chatting and of course setting up and packing up. Annual Fete - Saturday 15 October from 8.30am to 2pm - The fete is a highlight of our church year, with a role for everyone. Please reserve the date and start putting aside items to donate (silent auction, craft, plants, bric-a-brac, preloved clothes and books). Your help in setting up on the Thursday and Friday, and in the cleanup on Saturday afternoon and Monday is badly needed and would be very much appreciated.
