Using the Visual Identity Templates with Microsoft Word & PowerPoint

Important note: The Uniting Church has rules about the representation of its logo. Please do not use the visual identity templates in a way that distorts or changes the Uniting Church logo. It is OK to scale it.

If there is sufficient demand, Word and PowerPoint templates could be made for commonly required formats.

Microsoft Word

Method 1. Import and format the template image as a background in Word

This option preserves the intensity of the template image. It needs to be repeated for each page.

  1. Download the .jpg version of the template from StyleGuide and save in a convenient place on your computer (often the desktop is a good option).

  2. Select the ‘Insert’ and then ‘Pictures’ menu options.
  3. Select the ‘Picture from file …’ option.
  4. Select the template file you have downloaded. Its image will appear in the document but in the wrong place and the wrong size.
  5. Select the image by left-clicking on it once.
  6. Look for the ‘Wrap Text’ option and select it. It might be under the ‘Format’ menu, or it might be on the ‘Layout’ ribbon. Select the ‘Behind Text’ option.
  7. Now the visual identity will be a background, and it can be scaled to fit the area by dragging the corner handles of the image. If need be the background can be scaled to be bigger than the page so that it will be cropped to fit the page when printed. It can also be moved around on the page to be correctly positioned by clicking and dragging any point within the image.

** Don’t resize the image using the handles on the centre of the sides or top or bottom because this will distort the design.

  8. Type text on the page (over the top of the background image) as you require.

Method 2. Use the template image as a watermark

This option results in a washed out background of the template image. It can apply to the entire document. This option is not as flexible as the first option, but is simpler. It also might not work, but is worth a try.

  1. Download the .jpg version of the template from StyleGuide and save in a convenient place on your computer (often the desktop is a good option).

  2. Look for the ‘Watermark’ option. It might be under the ‘Design’ tab on the ribbon, or it might be under the ‘Layout’ and the ‘Page Background’ menu.
  3. Select the ‘Picture’ option and ‘Select picture …’ Before clicking OK, make sure that the scale option is ‘auto’ and the ‘washout’ box is not selected.
  4. Click OK
  5. Type text on the page (over the top of the background image) as you require.

Type text on the page (over the top of the background image) as you require. If need be, use the PowerPoint 'Arrange' menu item to 'Send to Back' the visual identity image.

Note: A PowerPoint template suitable for presentations is available from StyleGuide.
