  • Safe Church training will be going on line in 2021. Those who are due are now allowed to wait for that before renewing.
  • Presbytery are advertising a Zoom meeting for this Wednesday about Human rights in the Philipines. Details at HumanRightsPhilipines2020.

  • We have received a letter from the General Secretary about the finances of the UCA Victas Synod.

    • The Synod Business Committee invites you to see the opportunities presented by a three-day virtual (online only) Synod meeting on February 26-28.
    • Consider nominating people normally unable to attend five-day in-person meetings:
    • People whose family, study or work commitments prevent attending a five-day meeting
    • People starting to explore the life of the wider church
    • People from ages/backgrounds which reflect the Synod’s strategic priorities
    • Synod 2021 is an opportunity to gather the breadth of today’s church.

  • Church Council met this week. Full minutes will be available at CouncilMinutes20200826. Decisions included:

    • The buildings will remain closed at least throughout September.
    • Adoption of a timetable to call a new MoW, aimed at ensuring continuity through Neil's likely retirement dates.
    • Investigations to begin on the practicalities of employing a part time social worker for the Welfare team using bequest money.
    • Quotes to be obtained for updating our on-line presence.
    • A task group to be set up to investigate the future of our multicultural ministry.
    • To investigate the possibility of "Virtual Membership" for those joining us on line from far away.
  • Our log of advice and actions in response to the virus continues to be updated.

  • Council agreed that it would not be possible to open the building in August, and that services will need to remain on line only at least until September.
  • Council also accepted a recommendation from the Fete committee the we accept that a fete will not be possible this October.

  • Disability values statement. In response to the federal Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability, we have published a Values Statement and short video about people with disability in the community. Our Disability Inclusion Advocate, Rev (Deacon) Dr Andy Calder, encourages all members of the church to view these two items and distribute them where necessary.

  • Presbytery are offering a range of learning opportunities.

  • The Anniversary letter is available here.

  • The latest advice from Synod is now available.

  • Government guidelines for churches after June 22 are at OpeningAfterCoronaVirus, item 14. Late ammendments to those plans are at item 16.

    • Places of worship will maintain their 20-person limits until at least July 12.

  • The Presbytery Newsletter for June is now available, and includes an article about Glen Waverley (p3-4).

  • As an extra communication channel for the current situation, we have set up a new email address, <discussions AT gwuc DOT org DOT au>, and an associated wiki page: PostShutDownDiscussion as a forum for members of the congregation to contribute to the discussion of the Church post COVID-19 shutdown. Contributions to that address will be collated and made available to all who logon to the wiki. Requests for wiki accounts should be sent to <wikimasters AT gwuc DOT org DOT au> .

  • The latest Synod information on COVID-19 is now available.

  • Information on re-opening our buildings can be found at OpeningAfterCoronaVirus. Basically the limit of 20 people and requirement for 4 square meteres per person prevent groups from meeting until after the next relaxation, expected to take effect from June 22.

  • To help meet gaps already identified and to enable longer term relief and recovery Synod have launched a Uniting Bushfire Appeal. You can find the appeal at https://www.vt.uniting.org/uniting-vic-tas-2020-bushfire-appeal/

  • Target Australia will match dollar for dollar all cash contributions made to the Appeal via coin boxes and registers in stores. (But it appears that you forego your tax deduction.)

  • Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has also been recommended.

  • A reminder that the church office will be closed until Tuesday 28 January – emails and phone messages will be monitored daily.
  • Don’t forget the Back to School and Backpack Blessing on Sunday 26 January at 10am.
  • Sunday morning worship will be a single service at 10:00am each week until the end of January 2020.
  • Watch this space for news about Sunday 4:30pm and 5:30pm activities in 2020.

There are also special deals for 6 or more persons; ask.
