Highlights of the year |
With special thanks to Kimberly Easton the GWUC Playgroups have had another successful year supporting families in our local community. The Playgroups are seen as an important part of GWUC's outreach, and are now being support by Community Outreach with the hope of beginning a "Christian Playgroup" on Wednesday's in 2010. |
The 4.30pm worship has had a very consistent group of new and old families this year. With it's current format it continues to provide a fun, safe, Christian community for families as they seek to explore Christ in their daily lives. Some highlights have been picnic and prayer walks at Jells Park, presentation of bibles to our Grade 3 children, having some of our upper primary children help to lead the singing in worship, our very yummy meals, watching the children as they enthusiastically learn more about God in interactive and creative ways and seeing a Christ centred community grow where adults and children deepen their friendships and care for each other. |

Highlights of the year |
• This year 97 children from the local and not so local area (we had enrolments from as far afield as Bentleigh, Lysterfield and Oakleigh this year, as well as over 60 from Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley) came together to celebrate the miracle of Christmas. |
• Christmas Alight involves members of all church services, and of all ages – from Kids Church, youth, and volunteers from all services. |
• We are involved in telling the real story of Christmas to those who are most likely to forget it – children! |
• This year we learnt about the pieces of Christmas - the star, angels, shepherds and Jesus were sung, drawn, made, eaten, and learnt about. |
• Children left the program with the understanding that the Good News about Christmas is the birth of Jesus, not the gifts. Seeing their faces, their excitement and joy at the activities and message offered is incredible. |
• It is an amazing outreach program, culminating in a family BBQ where people have a chance to meet, chat and enjoy the Church’s hospitality. |
• My personal highlight of the year was being shouted down by a group of about 60 children when I suggested that the Good News was that we received presents at Christmas. They were adamant that I was wrong, and many shouted out to me that the Good News was that Jesus was born. What an amazing gift to all volunteers to see this before Christmas. |

Highlights of the year |
Highlights: |
1. “Advance Day” – 30 May, 4 Jul, when Elders and Councillors met to discuss a) the church vision, and b) worship times and ministerial needs |
2. “Growing Generous Givers” a campaign to recognize and encourage the financial support given by the congregation towards the missional areas of the church. |
3. “On The Way Together” the fruition of a year-long study of the church’s mission and vision, culminating in a statement of our mission strategy in the four areas: Community of Faith; Inclusive Community; Community Hub; Community of Outreach. |
4. The development of a new framework for the “Church Structures”, a document identifying the roles, responsibilities and relationships of the major church infrastructure groups. |
5. The development of a recommendation to proceed with the appointment to the vacant Minister of the Word position, a recommendation subsequently approved nem. con. by the Congregation. |
2009 was a somewhat difficult year, due to changes with the Chair of Council. In January RossMackinnon was elected as chair, replacing Graeme Frecker who had been chair for a number of years. Unfortunately, Ross was not able to continue in the role, and stood down shortly after his election. A new election saw BeverlyMcGlead elected as chair, with JohnHurst as her deputy. Then in July, Beverley suffered a fall, which meant that she was unable to continue, and John assumed the role of Acting Chair while Beverley recovered. At the time of writing, Beverley has indicated that she will not seek re-election for 2010. |
During Beverley’s time as chair, an “Advance Day” was organized for May 6, and held at High St Rd Uniting Church, thanks to the good graces of the congregation there, and particularly to Rev Julie Ross. At this workshop, about 60 elders and councillors, under the leadership of Roger Vass discussed the difficulties facing the church (notably financial), and drafted some plans to address them during the day. Of particular help in this process was the On The Way Together vision that had been assembled under the guidance of Presbytery Minister — Mission Education: Rev Steve Terrell. |
That day proved too short to complete all the business that had been planned, and a second workshop was organized for 4 Jul 2009, this time under the guidance of the new Acting Chair, John Hurst. A report on this meeting is available at http://www.ajh.id.au/ggg/CouncilRetreat4Jul2009. |
Two key decisions came out of this meeting: a) to affirm the worship times, but to endeavour to make them genuinely accessible to wider audiences, and b) to proceed with the vision of filling the vacant 3rd placement. The latter had the consequence of needing action on the financial position, and to this end, Roger Vass convened a committee that developed a Growing Generous Givers plan, through consultation with Rev Carolyn Kitto from NSW UCA. This group set a target of realising a 30% increase in planned giving which unfortunately was not fully met, although we were encouraged by the achieved 21% increase, much more than had been realised in previous giving campaigns. The group also met all their sub-goals, such as increasing the number of direct debit givers. |
The work of the GGG campaign, and the recommendations of the council with respect to the third MoW placement, were endorsed nem. con. by a Congregational Meeting on 30 Nov 2009, and many saw this as a very positive step. |
During the year, a small sub-committee, led by Judy Lowe, examined the governance structures of the church, and presented a report to Council on Church Structures. This report identifies a new way of viewing the key relationships between the various governance groups of the church, and is currently being implemented. |
The Council has also been occupied in thrashing out the implications of the On The Way Together vision, and this has had some particular consequences, such as the need to re-establish the church Communications Committee, which will need to be charged with developing a broader strategy to ensure that all members of the congregation are aware of the Council’s vision for the future of the church, particularly with respect to the operation of the OTWT mission groups. These Missional groups (Outreach, Community Hub, Inclusive Community, and Growing Faith) also figure prominently in the Council’s thinking on the third MoW placement, and the development of the church profile for the Ministry Team. |
The Council has begun the process of replacing the office computer, and establishing a more modern database, which will better serve the needs of the congregation. |

Highlights of the year |
1. We now know how many Elders we have. (This was not known at the start of the year!) |
2. Elections for Elders were held in June, the first elections in three years – 23 Elders were elected, including 9 new Elders. |
3. Communication with Church Council is improving – each Elders’ Gathering includes items for Church Council. |
4. Elders were involved in and endorsed the recommendations of the Church Council’s Structures Committee. We look forward to these recommendations being fully implemented. |
5. Elders are starting to see that their role is more than just “serving at communion and welcoming people to worship” – they are being encouraged to take an active interest in at least one of the four Missional Groups – and are doing so. |
6. Elders should increasingly become better informed about what is happening around the Church as our Gatherings now include reports and feedback from the Ministry team, the four Missional Groups and Church Council. |
7. Elders are being encouraged to assist more in leading worship and to consider undertaking studies for Lay Preaching Accreditation. |
8. Joint “Advance Day” sharing with Church Councillors in July. |
Any needs that Church Council can assist |
1. Include an Elders segment on the Agenda each Church Council meeting. |
2. Implement fully the recommendations of the Structures Committee. |
3. Continue to work to improve communication between Church Council and the Elders. |
4. Remember that the Elders exist and have an important part to play in Church life. |
5. Consider making the “Advance Day” joint meeting an annual event. |

Many members of our church family comment on the flowers in our worship centre and feel personally involved through the “Thoughtful Flowers” program. |
This year we have farewelled two ladies who have given their time and talents for many years and they will be really missed. But good news! We welcome three new volunteers and the return of another. |
Any needs that Church Council can assist |
Funds for flowers are supplied by members who support the “Thoughtful Flowers” program (32 weeks in 2010), and by the families involved in weddings and funerals. |
If the flowers are ‘not funded’ the arranger may claim up to $30 from church funds. |
The estimated net cost to church funds is uncertain, but in 2009 appears to be $289. |
Some arrangers make no claim; most ladies use some flowers from private gardens. |
All give their skill without charge, and about eight hours of their time to arrange and tend the flowers during the week about three times each year. Funerals, and sometimes weddings, require fresh arrangements during a working week: funerals are unplanned! Storage space in the kitchen is needed for floral equipment. |

Highlights of the year |
* 2009 was a very successful and enjoyable year at Playgroups. This important community outreach reached over 30 local families including over 40 children throughout the year. Families came from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds with only three of the families attending Glen Waverley Uniting Church regularly. |
* An event was held each Term with Morning Tea and a special activity or craft provided, for example our Easter Morning Tea was very successful with the mum’s and kids enjoying warm Hot Cross Buns, fruit and an Easter Egg Hunt. The children also enjoyed making Easter craft provided by Belinda Chung, many thanks to Belinda, Carolyn and Kaye for assisting to make these events successful. Plans are currently underway for our Christmas Parties which Santa will visit and distribute gifts for the children and mum’s. |
* In August the Playgroup Support Team was formed with the assistance of the Outreach Team. We are now looking forward to being able to develop our Playgroups into Missional Playgroups and provide an even better outreach service to our local community. |

Any needs that Church Council can assist |
With the closing of Occasional Childcare at the end of Term 3 a number of tasks and their associated costs that previously were the responsibility of OCC became the responsibility of Playgroups. The management of these tasks (e.g. refilling the sandpit, tanbark, maintenance of equipment and toys) are still being discussed and assistance may be necessary from the Church community in the future. |

Any needs that Church Council can assist |
Implement current Child Safe (or Church Safe) procedures for Kids Church as was done for NCYC. Current practices are out of date with other organisations leaving our children and adult volunteers at risk. |
Coordination from a Children’s and Families worker. |
Encourage all congregational members to come along and see what happens in Kids Church. They might just be surprised. |
It would be great if some of the Baptismal Elders came to Kids Church helping to foster close bonds across generations. |
More/improved storage for craft and curriculum materials. The current Kids Church cupboard is quite dilapidated and access to it and the materials is difficult. |

* “Christian Playgroups”; KimberlyEaston has provided the impetus, having assembled ideas and data over the last few years on Christian Playgroups (not just a community venue which happens to be GWUC), “waiting” for someone to listen to her. KayeMackinnon has provided support and assembled a management Team comprising herself, GeraldineFleming, PamGraham and LorraineArgall (Treasurer). Hostesses are being sought to provide a “warm, friendly, presence at each Playgroup session and provide a Christian connection to GWUC. A third Playgroup (Wednesday) is planned to operate in 2010 and will be led by HelenBoucher. |
* Contact with Brentwood Secondary College; as they seek to strengthen their support of student needs other than just academic. . Alanee is GWUC’s contact for a range of specialist support. |
Asylum Seekers in 19 Southdown Manse; Robin Pope and her committee have been involved in various areas of Asylum Seekers work including the Asylum Seeker Centre Dandenong, and the Outer Eastern Asylum Seeker Network. The Recommendation to Church Council that the Manse at 19 Southdown Ave be provided rent free to Hotham Mission was passed unanimously and the Manse now houses a family. Robin has been very busy as she continues her work with these most vulnerable and disadvantaged people by being the contact person for GWUC. A small group of volunteers mow the manse lawns (with a dedicated, repaired lawn mower) as it is inappropriate for the current guests to do so. An information and volunteer training session will be held on Sunday 29th November 2009. |
* “Tanks for Timor” Project. Meagan & Judy Lowe and Jane Hart, visited Baguia, East Timor in September 2009 and walked the gruelling track to the mountainous village of Gulari and it’s Primary School. They told Outreach Group that there was no reticulated water at the School (and village) and the "Tanks for Timor” Project was established with support of Church Council. “Mini tanks” (empty soup/baked beans/ spaghetti/ etc tins with an appropriate label) are offered as collection tins for loose change, together with a donation form (Tax Deduction receipt) via the “Friends of Baguia, who are an established fund able to forward 100% of funds to Baguia. A 3minute DVD has been produced by Meagan to show a few photos and explain the situation. |
Jan, Belinda and Andrew Clear recommended this fund for those people who wished to make a donation in memory of Bruce. |
* GW Food and Wine Festival: Organised by Alanee with little notice and supported by the youth and young adults. Provided children’s’ craft activities, over 800 projects. Lots of comments and thanks from Parents. |
“We look forward to more involvement in 2010. Wouldn’t it be great to see the GWUC choirs on the main stages!” |
This is a GREAT opportunity of OUTREACH and COMMUNITY just outside our front door. |
* Kombi Krew: Already a well established Outreach project is expanding to be involved in the South Port Soup Kitchen on Thursday nights. They will serve healthy meals including some food from the South Port Community Garden, South Port Uniting. |
Whilst Kombi Krew has themselves done the organising and commitment to this venture, Outreach group stand ready to support them. |

FYI We were unable to find two people who were willing to be leaders of the Evening Group for 2010. Many have already held positions and new, younger members are scarce. Therefore we will welcome all to join in the morning group. It will be good to have one main group but I know that some will not be able to attend as the time does not suit and for that I am sorry. |
