Philosophy of the 8:00am Service
The 8am service is a communion service, reflective in style, drawing on a wide variety of modern liturgies. The form of the service is conventional. It follows a standard liturgical pattern with prayers, hymns, bible readings, and a homily delivered by the leader of the day. The latter may take a variety of forms, from a conventional sermon, exposition of the lectionary reading or a reflection/meditation on a poem or painting or piece of music. Occasionally the learning segment will focus on an outreach project currently undertaken by our congregation. Communion is always celebrated and is the focus of each service. Twice a month the service is led by a Presbytery-accredited Lay Presider.
The seating is informal to facilitate interaction. Services are held in a small chapel with a movable lectern. Often the communion table is the centrepiece of the seating, which is usually arranged in a double horsehoe facing inwards. Numbers are about 35-45, and most of the congregation re-assemble after the service to share fellowship over a cup of coffee at the local cafe.
