REPORT TO GLEN WAVERLEY UNITING CHURCH- CHURCH COUNCIL.
On Wednesday 5 February, Inclusive Community Committee met, for the first time in 2025.
We began the meeting with members writing (individually) two good activities that we (Inclusive Community ) organised in 2024 and two challenges that the committee faces in 2025.
The following activities were highlighted from 2024 :
- The Painting Sale.
- Morning teas after Worship (including food)
- The BBQ for Frontier services.
- Pancake Morning Tea.
- Special Morning Teas including Ian’s and Bill’s birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
- Sharing Pastoral concerns within our committee.
- Hospitality important and done well.
- Intergenerational activities being encouraged.
The challenges for 2025 were:
- being more inclusive and welcoming- people are slipping in although we have sunflower welcomers (We need to look at this roster and the purpose of sunflower welcomers).
- How do we reach out to other cultural groups, those with very little or no English.
- We used to have lunches for newcomers and families. What is needed now-what resources do we have, what structures do we need to put in place, ways to bring people together.
- We need to look at our Agenda and programs and decide what is relevant to this present time.
Our questions for Church council members are :
- How relevant is the Inclusive Community Committee now that we know longer organise light lunches or Munch with a Bunch? What do Church Council members think this committee should be doing?
- How do we get new members for the committee?
- How do we become more inclusive when we are getting new members nearly every week.
- Our other question concerns the Intercultural Group (Convenor Glyn Howells )-Should this group come under one of our missional groups?
- Should Vida’s lunches come under the umbrella of one of the missional groups or are they stand alone events.
