GWUC Headlines for w/e 30 June 2018

  • A newsletter from Assembly gives messages and invitations from the Assembly meetings.

  • Sunday 1 July – Club 2018 and Seniors Service - We welcome Rev John Bottomley who will lead our worship at the 9.15am and 11am services. Club 2018 will meet for lunch today following the 11am service. All welcome. Join with us for the Seniors Service at 2.30pm as we celebrate “God with Us” through readings and songs, featuring music from Free Spirit. Followed by afternoon tea.

  • Office Hours – Monday 2 July to Friday 13 July - Heather will be on leave from Monday 2 July to Friday 13 July, spending the first week at a College intensive. During this time Wendy will be in the office each day from 9.30am until 3pm.

  • Material Aid Offering – Sunday 8 July - Our material aid offering for July is to help gorillas in the wild by collecting old mobile phones. These are recycled and funds raised will be donated by Zoos Victoria to support primate conservation. Next time when your phone rings let it be a reminder that “They’re Calling On You!” PhoneCycle is working with Zoos Victoria to help protect the environment and save gorillas in the wild.

  • Sunday 24 June – Combined Anniversary Service - Join us today for our Anniversary Service at 10am. Following the service there will be a communal feast, and everyone is invited to bring a plate to share. To ensure we have a variety of sweet and savoury, Surnames A-L are asked to bring a sweet and Surnames M-Z a savoury. Soup will be provided to start.

  • Safe Church Training – Today (24 June), 26 June or 28 June - As part of our child protection policy, all designated leaders and those who may interact with children in the congregation are required to undertake safe church training every two years, as well as having a Working with Children Check. Three more training sessions have been scheduled and anyone is welcome to attend. It would be helpful if you could let David Morgan or Dorothy Lockhart know which session you plan to come to.

  • Seniors Service – Sunday 1 July at 2.30pm - Join us as we celebrate “God with Us” through readings and songs, featuring music from Free Spirit. Followed by Afternoon Tea. All are welcome. If you require transport please contact the Office by Wednesday 27 June.

  • Neil's sugeon has advised that the operation went well. (Monday 2pm)
  • Neil moved from Intensive Care Unit (one nurse per patient) to Close Observation Unit (one nurse for four patients) on Tuesday afternoon.

  • Sunday 27 May – Christian Unity Ecumenical Celebration - As part of the Christian Unity Ecumenical Celebration we welcome visitors from other local churches to our 11am service today. Please make them welcome.

  • Sunday 27 May – Wildlife Warriors Fundraiser - Today Elizabeth Hon will be conducting a simple fundraiser for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors. If you would like to support her venture please have a guess at how many lollies are in the jar. Just 50c a guess and the winner gets the jar!

  • Adult Group – Friday 1 June at 8pm - Join us for Adult Group on Friday 1 June at 8pm in the Fellowship Area. Come and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, light supper and fellowship. All are welcome.

  • Mindfulness Meditation – Tuesday afternoons at 2pm and 3pm - Psalm 131: I have Stilled and Quieted My Soul
    Due the number interested in Mindfulness Meditation, two sessions will now run on Tuesday afternoons. The first will be from 2pm to 2.45pm, and the second from 3pm to 3.45pm. If you would like more information please contact Susan Karoly on 0433 692 862.

  • Sunday 13 May – Mothers’ Day - Sunday 13 May is Mothers’ Day and there will be a special Mothers’ Day focus at the 9.15am and 11am services. There will be a very special celebratory morning tea at the usual time this morning. All are welcome.

  • Sunday May 13 – Material Aid Offering - Material Aid Offering for May will be for the Glen Waverley Uniting Church Welfare Team. Donations could include non-perishables such as breakfast cereals, long-life milk, canned fruit, soups, noodle meals, tea, coffee, Milo, biscuits and toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and washing powder.

  • Material Aid Offering – Share the Dignity – This Sunday April 8 - There are over 85,000 women that will need help this year. Due to homelessness, poverty or escaping domestic violence, women in crisis are forced to use makeshift sanitary items. Share the dignity provides free sanitary items to everyone in need affording them the dignity that many of us take for granted. Your generous donations of sanitary items will make a real difference to women in need.

  • Light Lunch – Sunday 8 April - A light lunch will be held after the 11am service this Sunday, 8 April. All are welcome.

  • COP Applications - Applications for grants from the Glen Waverley Uniting Church fete proceeds opened on March 26 and will close on April 27. Details regarding the application process and form are available on the wiki under Community Outreach Projects 2018.

  • Important Asylum Seekers Support - Outer Eastern Asylum Seeker Support Network (OEASSN) has been invited to operate the Mt Waverley Lions Club Opportunity Shop for two weeks in May to raise funds for our support of asylum seekers.   • Chinese New Year Festival in Kingsway - Sunday 25 February - Next Sunday, 25 February, the annual Chinese New Year Festival will be in full swing over the road from our church complex. This year, Dietrich will be part of our team at our tent in the heart of the festival. We are looking for volunteers to meet and greet people and to help children with craft activities. This is a fun and exciting Intercultural outreach activity of our church. You can be part of the team by signing up outside the office.

  • January Worship Services - A reminder that during January there will be one combined service of worship each Sunday at 10am.

  • Office Matters - The church office has reopened and will be staffed between 9.30am to 3pm each day until Friday 19 January. Normal office hours will resume after this time.

  • Attention all Hall users - The hall has been resurfaced and all users will need to be extra careful, as the surface has a non-slip coating. Be careful when using the hall as the fresh coating will not allow slipping or sliding of your feet. Please ensure that everyone lift and carry all chairs, tables and other equipment (not drag) so as to preserve this surface for as long as possible. Finally, it is essential that every liquid spill and any food remnants are cleaned up to ensure the hall is safe for everyone.

  • This Sunday – Christmas Eve – 24 December at 10am - On Christmas Eve there will be worship at 10am, 5pm and 11pm. Christmas Day there will be worship at 8.30am and 10am. All are welcome.   • Office Matters - The church office will be closed for the two weeks after Christmas. The office will re-open on Monday 8 January and remain open from 9.30am to 3pm each day until Friday 19 January. Normal office hours will resume after this time.

  • Hall Closure - During the dates of January 3 to 10, 2018, the hall will be resurfaced. All hall doors will be locked and there will be no access through the hall or to the store rooms at that time. They are seeking to integrate into our congregation and this would be a great way for us to get to know one another. The night will include dinner, song and dance. Cost for the event is by donation. Profits will be shared between Glen Waverley Uniting Church and supporting rural ministry in Indonesia.

  • Nomination for Church Council – Nominations Close July 30 - This year there will be nine vacancies to fill on Church Council. An election of Church Councillors will be held on Sunday August 20 following each worship activity. Entry to the clubhouse is from from Highvale Primary School car park at the end of Ashton and Plymouth Street, Glen Waverley.

  • Indonesian Cultural Night – Saturday 12 August - Our Church Community is invited to an Indonesian Cultural Night to be put on by the small Indonesian congregation who have been worshipping in our premises on Sunday afternoons. They are seeking to integrate into our congregation and this would be a great way for us to get to know one another. The night will include dinner, song and dance. Cost for the event is by donation. Profits will be shared between Glen Waverley Uniting Church and supporting rural ministry in Indonesia.

  • Seniors Service – This Sunday – 16 July at 2pm - All are welcome to come and join with us for a service based around the Lord’s Prayer. There will be a selection of well-known hymns, and afternoon tea will follow the service.

  • Material Aid Offering for RSPCA – Sunday 9 July - This month’s material aid collection will support the work of the RSPCA. Donations of blankets, towels, pillow slips, tea towels, pet friendly toys, sealed pet food and polyester filled doonas are welcome. Please note - all pillows and feather filled doonas are not accepted.

  • Combined Worship and Meeting of the Congregation – Sunday 9 July - Following Combined Worship at 10am this Sunday we will join in a Meeting of the Congregation at 11.30am.   • Church Bulletins - In response to several concerns expressed by members of the congregation about missing Bulletin emails, a new wiki page ChurchEmailVanishing has been created to assist people in restoring the delivery of their Bulletins.

  • Club 2017 – Sunday 2 July at 12noon - Club 2017 will meet after the 11am Service on Sunday.

  • UCAF – Tuesday 4 July at 10am - Members will meet for morning tea at 10am. This will be followed by our meeting where we wil hear from Hanna Landray from South-east Volunteers. All are welcome to attend.

  • Men’s Fellowship – Tuesday 4 July at 2pm - All are welcome to come and hear our speaker who will be sharing about Melways.

  • Adult Group – Friday 7 July at 8pm - Alan Robison and six others will make presentations on this night. For more information contact Alan Barnard on 9800 1188.
