Fete History
In response to a question in Aug 2020, WarrenGreenwood wrote:
Even before Church union in 1977 Springy Road and Bogong Ave churches had their own fetes. Both had had fetes for a number of years when Judith and I started to worship at Springy road in 1974. Both congregations had held fetes for many years. After union, we continued to have our own fetes until around around 1980. IanMcMillan and I took over Springy Road fetes back in 1986/87.
Because the Bogong ave site was under construction, the first real combined fete was held at Springy Road in around 1989. It was a similar format to now. By the time the new church opened in December 1991, we were able to have a fete on the new site in October (ish) of 1992, and have had one ever since. Those early fetes were NOT for COP projects which came many years later, but the format of the current fete goes back to the 1989 fete at Springy Road and then at the new building 1992.
Many people had run the Springy Road and Bogong Ave fetes in those years. But NeilLeister, IanMcMillan and I did those early combined years and for the next 20 years, with Bruce Robinson joining the committee in the mid years as well as Ken Devos, and then after 20 years we all stepped back from running it and allowed others to run it with us just being helpers.
So the shorter answer is that the current format fete has run on the current site since 1992 (28 years) but came from firstly the two fetes, then combined in (say) 1989 until the new building was available.
I hope that helps (p.s) Knowing IanMcMillan, he probably still has our first Combined Fete meeting minutes from around 1989!!!!!!!!
(P.p.s.) David, most of this is in the church archives (boxed in the store rooms) that Bill Henderson put together back in the mid to late 90”s. And maintained for a few years. But since then, only the office Correspondence emails and records (and much later the wiki) maintain details of any of these events. We really do need to find that long awaiting archivist resource. Us old “b.....” are beginning to forget:):)
