ELDERS REPORT FOR CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING 28 SEPTEMEBR 2011

The Elders met on Wednesday 14th September 2011. The main item on the Agenda was our learning segment which was led by Rev Rosemary Carter. Rosemary presented the material on church types which she presented at the August 2011 Church Council meeting. Instead of using the titles used for the Church Council, (Family Church, Pastoral Church, Program Church, Corporate Church), Rosemary described each of these models using a Food theme – (Sunday Family Roast, Getting-to-know-you Progressive Dinner, Smorgasbord, Wedding Banquet).

The Elders spent most of the meeting listening to and discussing what Rosemary had to say and the discussion was at a high level. The Elders feel that there are still many people in our congregation who think that we should and can run on the Family or Pastoral model, but this is clearly unrealistic, given our size and complexity.

The Elders think that the material Rosemary’s presented is very important and should be known and understood by as many people and groups within the congregation as possible. The size and complexity of our congregation means that we need new ways of thinking about how we are organised and how we can offer pastoral care without unrealistically leaving all this to the ministers.

The Elders are very grateful to Rosemary for her stimulating presentation.
