Advice on alcohol policy from Synod

The following points summarise an exchange of emails between DavidMorgan & Ian Firth in February 2013.

Whether alcohol is permitted in the church or hall is a matter for the Church Council to determine.

Whether alcohol is used in the manses is a matter for the minister and not for the CC.

There are no guidelines as there are so many different scenarios to attempt to cover.

What I’ve frequently said is that is the request is from a person organising a 21st birthday party then I would definitely say no. But if the request is for wine and champagne at say a 40th wedding anniversary then I would agree to that. Ultimately the judgement is whether the person/group asking to have alcohol is judged to be responsible.

If a person attending an event at the church is affected by alcohol then that’s primarily a responsibility of the organisers of the event. But if the church is sued then our Public Liability policy will respond to the claim.
