Communications Committee Report – Mar 2011

The Communications Committee met on Monday 14 Mar 2011, and reports the following to Church Council for their consideration.

1. NewView

Despite approaches to many people, the Communications Committee has been unable to find a person to oversee the production of NewView. There are some people who are willing to help (including John Hurst), however no-one has been found who is willing to take overall responsibility. Efforts to find a NewView leader will continue, but it is possible that NewView will not continue.

2. Easter letters

The Communications Committee has not identified a person to oversee the production of pastoral letters for Easter, the Church Anniversary, and Advent on an ongoing basis. In the light of the urgent need to get something out for Easter, Cynthia Chin has offered to coordinate this with assistance from Jan Clear, but this is not an on-going commitment.

3. Explanatory notes for church furnishings

Some of the furnishings in the church (e.g. the mat on the back wall) have an interesting story associated with them that is not accessible to visitors to our church. The Communications Committee were asked to consider this situation. It was concluded that it would be nice for visitors to be able to access information about items of significance in the church (e.g. the mat on the back wall, the font, the cross). While the comprehensive story behind church furnishings may well be best place in a record book, a small notice on or near the furnishings would make visits to our church richer and is recommended by the Communications Committee. The Communications Committee envisages a few lines of a few words would be appropriate. For example, “This ... was made by ... and presented to the Glen Waverley Uniting Church on ... .” The Communications Committee refers this to Church Council for further action (possibly by reference to the Property Committee).

4. Ministerial team information

At present, details of the ministerial team are provided on professionally printed notices attached to the glass adjacent to both entrance doors. The Communications Committee suggests that these signs would be better presented and preserved if a glass-fronted frame could be provided for them and mounted in a suitable way near the entrance doors. It is intended that updated inserts could be placed in such frames and easily updated from time to time. The Communications Committee refers this to Church Council for further action (possibly by reference to the Property Committee).
