We have continued to support the Dandenong Asylum Seeker Centre, run by David Spitteler, with many donations of food, clothing and linen, which are collected and delivered by committee members. David preached at all our worship services on August 11 and was well received.
Committee members and several other GWUC members assisted in delivering leaflets or doorknocking for the Whitehorse Community Chest in June, as part of our support for the Outer Eastern Asylum Seeker Support Network (of Lentara ASP). This resulted in a grant of $6362 which is being used for the rental cost of a unit in Heathmont housing asylum seekers. In addition, we were granted a further $3500 from the GWUC 2013 fete proceeds, to be used for this purpose also.
Committee members have attended several seminars and rallies to raise public awareness of AS conditions, and to put pressure on policy makers. We joined others in successfully lobbying Labor Senators to vote against the legislation reintroducing Temporary Protection Visas - although the new Senate in July 2014 will reconsider the bill.
We continue to play an active role on the OEASSN committee, with two members attending their meetings very six weeks and receiving a briefing from Lentara ASP staff who also attend.

We would like to see the introduction of a rotating monthly material offering in worship services in support of the various COP projects currently supported by GWUC. A regular week (say, first week of the month) could be established with advance reminders in the Weekly Bulletin of what the project will be for that month, and what items are requested. The items could be placed in baskets at the door on entry to the service, or brought forward to be placed in the baskets while the offering is being collected.

To ensure GWUC's registration as a food premises is renewed annually by Monash City Council in order that GWUC can continue to undertake the many and varied food-related activities which are such a central part of our fellowship and service.

Highlights of the year:

CKC liaises with Monash City Council Environmental Health Officers regarding kitchen use and undertakes food handling compliance. This includes quarterly meetings, kitchen rosters, review and upgrading of our Food Safety Program, maintenance of records, being present at formal inspections of our premises and seeking advice as needed. The committee is very active and co-operative, and seeks to monitor compliance and maintain the high standard recognised by Monash Council in recent inspections.
This year saw the satisfactory completion of new kitchen cupboards after much liaising between CKC, property committee and kitchen user groups. This has given user groups valuable extra space as well as providing spare cupboards for occasional use such as to temporarily place handbags/ valuables.
Yan Emms assisted by Margaret Fraser worked tirelessly this year to ensure GWUCs compliance under the level 2 food premises and events categorization. Thank you Yan and Margaret. It is a requirement now that ALL church events that sell food to the public need to provide a Statement of Trade at least 5 working days prior to the event. This notice should be given as early as possible to the church office or FS Supervisor for submission via the 'Street-trader' Portal.
On a practical level the following new items were purchased for the smooth operations of the kitchen:
o Digital thermometer
o Knives (sharp)
o Microwave oven
The first-aid box above the hand-wash sink in the kitchen was also updated and the clasps replaced, whilst the oven seal was also replaced.
Our annual review and a short training session for group members was completed in August by Kelli. In October Monash City Council conducted their annual food safety inspection of our premises. Once again the Church not only passed the inspection, but received another 5 star 'Golden Plate Award'. We received 100% satisfaction 112points out of 112! The CKC recognises the efforts of all kitchen users in helping us to achieve this award.
Once again successful compliance to our FSP by all those involved in food handling at the annual fete was achieved in October. Though the fete was not visited by a council Food Safety Inspector, our own coordinators and contributors did a superb job of following all food safety guidelines.
The last meeting was held on November 18th whereby Kelli completed the 2nd half of training for group members and stepped down from her position as co-ordinator and trainer. She has offered to assist with training if required in 2014.
GWUC's food-related activities, both on and off-site, continue to expand and change. Our approved Food Safety Program must remain current and sufficient to demonstrate good practice.

Highlights of the year:

January - August 2013
In the first part of the year, Council was somewhat dominated by Ministry team changes and their consequences. After Rosemary's resignation, we engaged Carolyn Kitto to undertake the required Life & Witness Consultation, as Presbytery advised us that there would be an extensive delay if they were to do it. This led to Greg's resignation, and to the Congregation adopting in principle Carolyn's recommendations for reforming Council & Elders. We arranged for a team of retired Ministers to provide an Interim Ministry Leadership Team, but were unable to arrange supply ministry despite extensive efforts. We owe a great debt to this team, and to Alanee, Alison and Belinda for their sterling efforts. A Steering Committee refined Carolyn's proposals and the final version was again adopted by the Congregation. Council then set about preparing for the transition to the new Council. During this period, all Elders were invited to Council meetings, in order to maximise communication of the processes.
September - November 2013
The new Church Council was given the brief to provide Spiritual oversight, build up the Congregation in Faith and Love and sustain members in Hope. The four Missional groups and Church Council endeavour to lead the Congregation to a fuller participation in Christ's mission in the world.
Recently,a flyer was produced by Church Council inviting all members of the Congregation to join in the activities of at least one Mission group. We ask and challenge everyone to prayerfully consider Mission Groups and Committees (Finance, Communication, Property) and ask “How can I serve God ?”
We are currently in the process of developing a strategic plan for GWUC based on the information gathered in the first half of 2013.

Communications

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

The Glen Waverley Uniting Church Council has established a Communications Committee with the following responsibilities:
1. to oversee and coordinate all communications across the congregation ensuring that they are done in a timely and inclusive manner;
2. to introduce new methods of communication as appropriate;
3. to facilitate the production of a church magazine (currently called NewView) in a variety of formats (to bring the congregation together through the use of information and entertainment);
4. to ensure that all church communications are clear, appropriate and that no bias or offensive content is present;
5. to continue to develop our online and web presence as an outreach activity;
6. to maintain all brochures and promotional material used by GWUC;
7. to seek to make best use of community material to publicise events and activities at GWUC;
8. to liaise with Property Committee and make use of, and manage, any external signage;
9. to take advantage of free promotional media wherever possible (i.e. Real Estate boards);
10. to publicise and communicate Presbytery and Synod activities and events; and
11. to encourage, support and assist all forms of communications in GWUC.

Focus for 2013 has been maintenance and updating the Communications Strategic Plan and Guidelines associated with the various communications options. The Communications Strategic Plan contains 23 communications options divided into the categories of: printed, electronic, in-person and signs. Guidelines are available concerning a style guide for Glen Waverley Uniting Church publications, email guidelines, social media vision and policy, website upload guidelines, photo release, worship video recording practices, external printing, and temporary notices on public land.
Work is underway to refresh the Glen Waverley Uniting Church website. An approach and design concept has been agreed and implementation is expected during the first half of 2014.
In 2012, a Facebook site was established for the Glen Waverley Uniting Church (with associated policy and guidelines for its management). However, to date it is not widely used. In 2013, focus has been on how the Communications Committee can encourage and stimulate more use. As a result of this work, we hope that 2014 will see more effective use of Facebook as a communications channel.
In the light of changed organisational arrangements within the Glen Waverley Uniting Church, options are being explored to recruit new members to the Communications Committee with a view to adding a capability to assist in creating communications materials (physical and electronic) for specific purposes.

Free Spirit

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

Music can warm the soul and bring us closer to the Lord!
Free Spirit is a group of people who aim to enrich worship through music - and sometimes have some fun with other types of music as well. Free Spirit is regularly part of the worship at the Glen Waverley Uniting Church, but also likes to be part of worship with other congregations from time to time.
Free Spirit is self-funding; each member contributes $1 per week and this is used to buy music.
Free Spirit operates under a privacy policy in accordance with GWUC guidelines.

Inclusive Community MG

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

To develop fellowship groups within the congregation, to improve pastoral care and welcoming procedures, to offer hospitality within the congregation, to support Seniors' Ministry, to support those who are performing tasks including Supportive care link and Cradle Roll, to work with Communications Committee to improve communication within GWUC.

1. Munch with a Bunch lunches have been held at the RSL and Mountain View hotel every couple of months.
2. Morning teas have been held after 11am services every month.
3. We met with Alanee and plan to have a lunch or tea next year for young families, youth and older people. We will arrange a time with Belinda and Alanee.
4. We have organised lunches after combined services.
5. We support CLUB 2013 and Seniors' functions.
6. We organised Sharonne Price's visit in August and have conducted several workshops since then. We will finish the workshops early next year and do some more work on forming clusters. The first clusters will include those who have asked for contact and we have been unable to provide that.

Leisure Time

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

Leisure Time is a community outreach program of GWUC. It serves the aged and lonely members of the Glen Waverley community in an inclusive and caring way.
Leisure Time aims to:
o Enable those in its care to develop positive relationships with each other and their community;
o Deliver high quality services which promote human dignity;
o Liaise and cooperate with other community service agencies in developing accessible and relevant services

Average attendance has been about 15 guests per week over the year.
Each Monday*, we use 3-5 drivers, 4 home cooks, 3 kitchen helpers and 3-4 hosts.
*Total of 63 volunteers. All helpers are on a roster, and most help once/month.

Highlights of the year:

o Continuing and growing positive relationships with and between guests. Many say it is the highlight of their week. Volunteers value the fellowship too.
o Our guests appreciate the opportunity to meet weekly in such a friendly and hospitable setting, for a nice meal, and a chance to chat and laugh. We quite rightly claim to promote “social inclusion” and “community engagement” when we apply for our Community Grant through Monash City Council each year.
o We have organised 5 successful outings this year. Successful application for Monash Community Grant to subsidise outing costs.
o Pastoral care of guests and their families and with some volunteers is considered a significant part of our Christian care. For example, we have supported those with deaths in the family, including one guest who suffered the suicide death of her grandson, and those whose medical conditions have deteriorated. We have visited those who have neede to move into residential care. We have also provided support to Maria's family following her death, including attending the funeral.
o Promotion of Leisure Time widely in the local community, and with other aged support agencies, including participation in the Monash Interagency Network (local aged care agencies) and Monash Positive Ageing Lifestyles (PALS) program.
o Members of the committee who lead with enthusiasm and great commitment.
o Participation in the Community Hub Missional Group with a targeted support for the member groups including Leisure Time and their work in the local community.
o Celebration of Grandparents' Day as a combined Leisure Time and Playgroup session during Seniors Month (October).

Any needs that Church Council can assist:

o Encourage congregational members to assist as volunteers
o Pray for continued wisdom in planning our programs, and for our guests.
o Support all our volunteers and the committee in their efforts for this weekly program
o In spite of an obvious community need, the age, isolation and medical status of our guests make maintaining optimum numbers on our guest list a constant challenge. We do rely on “word of mouth” and our positive reputation with local agencies to connect with seniors who would benefit from attending Leisure Time.
NB. An annual report with more detail is prepared for the AGM in April and will be sent to Church Council following that meeting.

Our cuppa break gave us a chance to share fellowship with one another & time to swap stories.
We thank BarbaraChamberlain & DorothyGraham & ShirleyWilliams for their efforts in providing afternoon tea.
As agreed at our October meeting, I have sent $40 to Church Council for tea/coffee etc., & today it was agreed that we would collect donations from members for East Timor as outlined by our August speaker, Judy Lowe, and $200 was collected.
I look forward to 2014 for continued fun & fellowship.

Seasons of the Spirit material where the group deepens members spirituality and
explore individual faith through activities and discussions that encourage faith
development and trust in God.
The Art of Spiritual Listening by Alice Fryling was a Lenten study on how to listen for God's presence and love in Scripture, in times of doubt, in prayer, in
disappointment and asking for God's transforming power.

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

To participate in the Outreach Mission of the Church by facilitating playgroups which aim to provide a welcoming, supportive, happy and safe community for mothers (or other carers) and their young children.

Highlights of the year:

o We have full (in fact over) enrolment in all three groups, and a substantial waiting list
o In each group we have established a shared morning tea time, age appropriate art and craft activities and nursery rhyme singing time in every session
o Membership of The Community Hub Missional Group has been very beneficial. Visit to Leisure Time was a great success.
o Continued encouragement and practical support from the Property Committee has been appreciated
o There has been ever increasing cultural diversity of playgroup membership. We now have about 10 South Korean families as we as families from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, China, Singapore, Pakistan, USA, the UK and Australia
o There has been interest from playgroup mothers in the activities of GWUC, particularly 4.30 Family Worship, and Story Hub. Playgroup families participated generously in the Christmas Child boxes appeal. About 25 families came to the fete.
o Support and visits from the Ministry Team have been appreciated
o Grace is sung before morning tea at each session
o Birthdays have been celebrated with food from diverse cultures!
o Christmas parties with visits from 3 GWUC gentlemen as Santas were a great success
o Many mothers are very recently arrived in Australia without extended family or friends and have no support or company except their husbands.
o Enrolments come by word of mouth, through The Hub and the majority, via the GWUC website. A number of families enquire for places before even arriving in Australia!

Property Committee

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

To maintain, expand and care for the Property/s used by the Glen Waverley Uniting Church for the benefit of all of the congregation and act as a stewardship caretaker for those properties on behalf of the Uniting Church in Australia. To generate income from the property in a manner that is consistent with the UCA and GWUC philosophies.

• Indonesia Congregation (UCA) from Mulgrave UCA to rent 19 Southdown for up to 10 years.
• 15 Southdown to be vacated by 31 December and new minister to occupy 16th January 2014
• (Negative highlight) Increased Insurance and services charges (10%)

Story Hub

Providing a place for parents to meet other parents and for children to listen to a story and play.

Story Hub has grown from 2 families attending earlier in the year, to now an average of 3-4 families each week. There is a solid group of 2 families who attend every week, but it seems to be a fairly transient group.

The Hub

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

To connect with people in the community who come in to the church, and also people in our congregation, by being welcoming and offering hospitality.

Highlights of the year:

Special Morning Teas at The Hub - Well attended, great atmosphere, increase in number of people from the community.
Hot Cross Bun Morning Tea in March - $270 donated to The Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
Cancer Council Australia's Biggest Morning Tea in May - $600.45 donated to Cancer Council Victoria .
Muffin Morning in August - $305.75 donated to Cancer Council Victoria.
Seniors' Morning Tea in October - Group of about 20 people from the City of Whitehorse and a few people from Doncaster attended as well as many from our local community.

Christmas Morning Tea at The Hub to be held in December.
Children's Christmas Photos in Nativity Dress-ups at The Hub in December - a great chance to tell the Christmas story very simply as children dress up.
Continued support and participation in some of our special morning teas from The Body Shop staff and Muddings Bakery.
Many people continue to come to The Hub to practise speaking English in an informal way. These people also looking for a community to belong to. Many feel at home at The Hub and even make their own cuppa.
The Hub events being advertised in the Monash Council PALS booklet bringing in more people from the community.
Donation of $50 from PALS Monash Seniors' Festival towards our Seniors' Morning Tea.
A few regular visitors to The Hub have returned to their homes overseas, but continue to keep in contact with us by email, always saying thank you for the help we gave them, how much they miss us all at The Hub and that they hope to come back to The Hub one day.

Continued support, prayer and participation.
Encourage others to help by being volunteers at The Hub.
Would church council advise us re setting up an 'emergency assist' list when we have the occasional difficult/problem guest situation.

To provide opportunities for friendship, fellowship, socialisation and pastoral support.

Welfare Committee

Purpose, Aim or Mission of the Group:

The purpose of the GWUC Welfare Committee is underpinned by the mission of the GWUC within the Community Hub Mission Group.
We provide practical, spiritual and emotional support to those in our Church and in the wider community, who seek our assistance. Some recipients self refer, others are referred by congregation members or local agencies. All referrals are responded to promptly.
Primarily our focus is on the day to day living expenses and general independent functioning of individuals and families
.
Those we see are encouraged to access existing community resources including those within our Church.

Highlights of the year:

In our interactions and the variety of interventions, with or on behalf of those we assist, we pray and endeavour in some way , as representatives of GWUC, that we are able to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
Assistance has included providing a “listening ear”; counselling on a number of levels: sharing a prayer; referring to and liaising with specific community agencies ; accompanying the recipient of our service on community visits to various agencies as appropriate; providing food vouchers, finance and transport vouchers ;Christmas vouchers with toy/food donations from our congregation; and channelling donations to GWUC to specific areas of need amongst our recipients of care.

Our Committee would be grateful if our requests for annual grants, that are submitted, continue to receive consideration.
