I don’t think I could ever imagine what my first year as an ordained minister was going to look like. They give you an idea of what it is going to be like at theological college but when you put it all into practice it is different. We have also had a very less than ordinary year at GWUC, but maybe there is no such things as an ordinary year in ministry. I firstly want to thank all the council members and all of GWUC for their ongoing support for me and my family as we continue our journey at GWUC. I still feel called to be at GWUC and I look forward to journeying with God and GWUC to help spread Gods’ love and hope to our wonderful community. First aspect of ministry I would like to share is the continuing growth of the Badminton and Table Tennis ministry on a Monday and Thursday nights. Over the last few weeks, we have had over 30 people come each night. It has been wonderful to see the people come from all over the community. One of the highlights is to see that various age groups coming and playing, we have people in their 70s coming each week, but we have recently seen a lot of families coming and playing. Some of these families have included primary school aged children. It has been great to see people from all ages and all nationalities coming together and playing together. Lynne Boyer has done a wonderful job setting up and kept running a wonderful environment. One of the highlights of my first year at GWUC has been celebrating the number of Baptisms and confirmations that have happened. I have taken part in 8 in that past year. It has not just been children’s baptisms either, we have had young adult and adult baptism and confirmations. It has been great to journey with some of these people and also see them participate further in the life of the church. we have also had another inquiry about baptism from one of our newer church members. Cissie is recent comer to our church, she is a Chinese student who has found a home at GWUC. She has only recently become a follower of Christ. after talking with Cissie on the weekend, we thought we would have a 3–4-week prebaptismal class, where we will explore some of the foundations of Christianity including the Apostles creed. We will also open this up to anyone else within the church to see if they want to come along and join the conversation. Also, we have a few youth who are doing their final year of school. I am going to give a VCE/VM study pack to these youth, filled with letters, encouragement, stationery and snacks. These Packs give the youth a little pick me up during a very stressful time. In one of the letters that we will give the students it will outline the that the leaders will be praying for them during their VCE exams and while the meet their deadlines to hand all their work in. We will be giving these packs out in the next few weeks at youth group. Finally speaking of youth group, Next Friday is the set up for the fete, in previous years we have done an external activity like bowling, but we thought it might be too expensive for some of our families. So we have decided to do a scavenger hunt instead. Half will be done in the church and the other half will be done along Kingsway, when we are down Kingsway, each group will be assigned a leader to walk with them, so at no point will any of the youth be without a leader present. As we will be off site for some of the night, we need to notify church council that this will be happening. Ministry Team Report October 2024
1. Di Paterson
It has been a busy month, with lots of things happening at both Churches. I have been leading worship at all the services for the last month, plus pastoral care and hospital and nursing home visiting at Charman (Black Rock) .
I walk with the GOWERS at Jells Park and catch up with guys at Gomer most weeks. I have done a bit of visiting with a few people in hospital, one in isolation and one about to have major surgery.
Strathdon continues to go well, with good numbers at both services that I do on the 2nd Thursday of the month. It is excellent to be able to spend some time with members from our Church who are in Strathdon.
I attended Inclusive Community and attended and led devotions for UCAF.
It was sad to hear of the passing of Judy Boucher and to see her lovingly farewelled by family and friends in a beautiful service led by Rev Ian.
Attended the MLDC meeting, we are working on creating training material for Lay Leaders.
I led the opening Worship for the Lay Minister’s Training Day at Pilgrim. The training day was excellent and the speakers were most helpful, a good day’s training.
Attended the final Code of Ethics training for the year, it was a good session.
Attended the Induction of the new minister at Toorak, Rev Sylvia Akauola – Tongotongo, a very happy day for Toorak and Sylvia.
I have had Supervision, team meetings and Ministry Support group.
The renovations at Cheltenham are moving slowly and we might be in the new building before Christmas 2025!!
I am continuing to work with Coatesville Church and the profile has been approved by Presbytery, so things are moving along well.
