The Australian Religious Response to Climate Change Multi-faith Gathering at St Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday 7 May at 9.45 am for a 10 am start has been postponed to September 14 to 24 2024, to follow GreenFaith International's timetable.
There is a new refugee resettlement program that allows local communities to sponsor the resettlement of refugees at lower cost than previously: CRISP: Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot - Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia. They are seeking to identify any members of congregations that might have a strong interest in supporting refugees and might have the capacity and interest in exploring the option. Barth and the shadow of nothingness, Dr Daniel Sihombing
We want to congratulate Doctor Daniel Sihombing who successfully publicly (as is customary with a Phd from a Dutch University) defended his Doctoral Thesis before an international panel on Thursday 25 January on zoom. Daniel's dissertation is titled "Barth and the shadow of nothingness - a post Soeharto contextual reading and seeks to connect the theology of Karl Barth with political and theological thought and practice in contemporary Indonesia" and shows how Barth’s theology offers a doctrine that encourages resistance even into the present day. As the third proposition of the thesis says: 'A contextual reading on Barth’s doctrine of nothingness unleashes a comprehensive theological framework that resists conformism, rejects defeatist realism, and avoids over- optimism.’ We wish Daniel well and hope this significant academic work will continue to bear fruit in the future, both in the practice of ministry as well as in the international academic arena.Presbytery Newsletter for February is now available.

What makes these events important is that they are directed towards PASIFIKA people, recognizing the importance of their role in supporting/connecting with workers from their home communities. The occasions will provide an opportunity to find out more about the PALM Scheme, how it looks after the workers, and how best Pacific Diaspora may be involved in providing support. Each event is fully funded and will include a Pacific Meal with cultural entertainment contributions from PALM workers, and input from Australian Government personnel who run the program. To make the most of these one-off opportunities, please try and attend one of the events yourself and spread the spread the word around your Pacific community in each region, and encourage their attendance.

Dr Emily Rosenich is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Neuropsychology at the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. Emily’s research, funded by the Alzheimer’s Association, investigates how our lifestyles and our genetics interact to drive memory/thinking loss and dementia. In addition to her scientific work, Emily is a passionate science communicator and advocate for women in science. Exploring the Uluru Statement from the Heart with Rev Cannon Associate Professor Glenn Loughrey - Sunday 27 August at 3 pm (a Zoom Only Meeting) This is going to be a great chance for those who missed Glenn's excellent presentation in Murrumbeena church. Glenn is a Wiradjuri man. He is a leader at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University in Canberra and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne's Educator and Advocate for the Voice. He is the chairperson of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council, the vicar of St Oswald's in Glen Iris and artist in residence at St Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne.
