Chair election process

  • Situation
    • Unusual situation of a Council of mainly new members. Electing a new member as chair has difficulties, both for their understanding of the job and the meeting's ability to discern their potential, particularly as we are not all well known to each other.
    • Council has traditionally chosen new office bearers in February each year, so we do have the option of re-visiting office bearers then, or of choosing a transitional arrangement until then.
    • Previous office bearers are keen to help the new Council to establish itself.
    • The decision rests with this group.

  • Suggested "Decision tree".
    • Do we want to restrict nominations to continuing or renewing (not new) members?
    • Do we have a candidate from that group?
    • Do we want to consider a transitional arrangement?
      • We could coopt Helen until Feb. She has agreed.
      • We could form a "chair group" of people who might be prepared to stand for election in February; Helen would assist them for the rest of the year.
