Q&A on Church Council and Elders
What do Elders do?
Put simply, Elders share with the minister/s in providing spiritual oversight for a congregation or group of congregations. (Constitution Para 19) The Elders as a group are “responsible for building up the congregation in faith and love, sustaining its members in hope, and leading them into a fuller participation in Christ’s mission in the world.” (Basis of Union) Often the role is confused with pastoral care and visitation. Whilst Elders may do this, it is one of many ways they can keep in touch with members and provide spiritual guidance. The primary role of Eldership (oversight) is exercised in a council of the church such as Church Council.
Is it proposed that we will have only 10 Elders who are also Church Council members?
Yes, but there will be a time of transition. All current Elders will continue for their elected term. Those who choose not to stand for election to the new church council may designate the Missional or Task group of the church where they wish to continue to express their ministry of elder.
What about current Church Council members?
It is proposed that the term of all current Church Council members will conclude upon the election of the new Church Council.
What if I have been an Elder and really like visiting and doing pastoral care but don’t want to be part of a council of the church? Can I still do pastoral care?
Yes! Pastoral care is a vital role in the life of a congregation. Anyone who is no longer an Elder and wishes to retain a visitation ministry may do so with the Pastoral Care team and the ministers. You do not need to be an Elder to be a Pastoral Visitor.
I like assisting in worship and have previously done this as an Elder. Can I still be involved in worship?
Yes! Worship can be lead by anyone who wishes to do so, under the guidance of the ordained ministers in placement.
Are Elders elected by the Congregation?
Yes, they are elected by ballot and must receive the support of a majority of those participating in the Ballot. (Reg 3.3.2)
How many Elders are needed?
It is up to each congregation, to decide how many Elders it needs. (Reg 3.3.2 (d))
How many Elders are needed on the Church Council?
The UCA Regulations are clear that at least half of the membership of any Church Council shall be Elders. (Reg 3.3.1(b)) We are proposing that the 10 elected members of Church Council all be elders. There can in addition be up to 2 co-options. The ministers in placement are automatically members.
Who can be nominated as a Church Council member and Elder?
Anyone who is a member of the Congregation.
How long is the term of an Elder?
5 years, or less if stipulated by the person nominated. Elders are eligible for re-election at the end of their term. (Reg 3.3.2(f))
Can Elders and Church Councilors relinquish their positions?
Yes they can. An Elder and a Church Councillor can relinquish their office in the Congregation and cease to be recognised if he or she resigns from the particular office by notice in writing to the secretary of the Congregation.
