REPORT WELFARE MEETING RE: COMMUNITY FOCUSSED BEQUEST IDEAS.

Present: NeilPeters (chair), DorothyLockhart, FayeMcDougall, MargaretFraser and BobArgall.

Dorothy shared the guidelines of the Welfare Committee.

Margaret presented her thoughts which were really looking at what assistance could the Welfare committee do with to help them meet the growing demands of their important work.

Bob Argall had suggested a shed be purchased and food sourced to ensure needs can always be met. At the meeting Bob proposed buying a shipping container and cutting it down if necessary and installing a roller door. Bob had also moved to embrace the property committee’s thinking.

Neil reported that he had raised the shed proposal at the property committee meeting the previous week for any response. Property reported that there was no space for a shed out the back. The only space was where the bins currently are located and then where would the bins go. Property were very concerned about vermin and a shed outside storing food. Also, an outside shed raises security issues. Property proposed better quality and more cupboards in the hall behind the kitchen to meet the need.

Dorothy, Faye and Bob supported that consideration be given to the matter of inside cupboards, and built-in cupboards were suggested. Dorothy felt it important that food be turning over rather than storing larger volumes of food. Dorothy felt people were generous giving food and we were buying some food. Dorothy then outlined her view that consideration be given to employing a part-time social worker. This person would bring assessment skills. They may have a counselling capacity. They could support group activities. Based on need, the person could develop a mentoring program linking clients with a congregation member who had some training.

Needs/opportunities highlighted included some welfare clients would benefit from basic budgeting skills, cooking classes.

A social worker could work with Terry’s idea of a men’s group and men’s health issues as well as Deb Leigh’s choir proposal.

Dorothy was invited to write up her idea on a part-time social worker for consideration.
